What have you learnt about Technologies from the Process of Constructing this Product?

What have you learnt about Technologies from the Process of Constructing this Product?

During the process of constructing my title sequence I have learnt different methods of using technologies to my advantage, with the knowledge I was able to create an opening title sequence for a Thriller film.

As cinematographer it was my job to film as much as I could using a variety of different shots for the editor ( Max ) to chose from, this included in reshooting the same scene multiple times therefore he had different options to chose from in order to create the best possible outcome. I shot all of the footage using a DSLR Camera, this is because it was the best piece of equipment the school had to offer. I booked out and used other equipment like the steady cam and a tripod, this was to make sure all the shots and angles were steady and professional. There was certain shots that required to be recorded without a steady cam or tripod. This is because using hand held footage, much like shooting canted angle shots, has the effect of distorting the audience plus it also adds a realistic aspect towards the title sequence which engages the audience.

The tripod enabled me to use both panning and tilting techniques. Panning came in handy when I wanted to show as much of the set as I could without necessarily using a wide-shot. An example of when I used panning would be when I was filming an extreme close up of the investigation board but panned towards the right so more of the investigation board was revealed. An example of when I used tilting would be when i tilted the camera upwards from the end of the table. I did this because Harry ( Killer - JK Simmons ) was at the opposite end and though tilting the camera upwards from a low angle shot it presented Harry to be powerful which intimidates the audience as he is the antagonist.

Although I was cinematographer I also learnt a lot of editing techniques through Max. The first editing software I experimented with was Motion. Motion is a new programme recently added to the schools servers that was advised by my teacher to try out incase we wanted to use it to create our titles in our sequence. Myself and Max was experimenting with it in class and he explained how it was similar to Cinema 4D because it has a similar layout and it works the same way as Motion. We also decided to play around with our title by making it look creepy to match our genre because we wanted to know if that could be a possible option to use in our final cut. In the end we decided not use to use the motion titles and use the basic 2D titles from after effects.

To conclude, initially it was hard working and adapting with new technologies especially in our continuity sequence however the more I worked with this equipment the better I became at it. I am also confident with working on my coursework for Media Studies next year, now I have learnt a variety of techniques that make a good Cinematographer.

What Kind of Media Institute Might Distribute your Media Product and why?

The film Studio we chose to distribute our media product is Warner Brothers. This is because they are one of the big 6 and a very well known conglomerate recognised all around the world, which ensures it will be marketed and promoted up to a brilliant standard. Our film is also similar to their body of work because they have released award winning Hollywood thriller films like Syriana (2005) and recently released The Accountant (2016) which had huge commercial success and brilliant reviews by professional film critics. Due to our film being promoted by a Hollywood film studio our main goal is to create as much money as possible which is why we need to have a lot of star power.

In order to make a film a box office hit and to be a commercial success, star power is key. The protagonist in our film is played by Leonardo DiCaprio, this is because he is one of the worlds most recognised actors and ensures an established audience from his fan base alone. He is also very ideal to play this role because not only is he a talented actor but he has also been the main star in other thriller films like Shutter Island and The Departed. These are both Crime/Thriller films which happens to be the same genre as ours. In The Departed, Leornado DiCaprio plays the role of a detective. Therefore, he already has knowledge of being this character. The Departed is also a Martin Scorsese film, which was produced by Warner Brothers, which fits perfectly with our film because Scorsese is our director. We chose Scorsese as our director because he has directed brilliant thriller films in the past both critically and commercially; however this wasn't the only reason to why he was chosen. In my pitch I explain how ideal of a director he would be because he has worked with Leonardo DiCaprio and Warner Brothers before, he has also directed some of the worlds most critically acclaimed films which ensures he will do his job well. In addition to this, JK Simmons ( our films protagonist ) starred in the Warner Brothers most recent production " The Accountant " of which is a thriller film. Therefore, he would be ideal for this role as he can work well in this type of environment.

Due to our film being a Hollywood movie it will be integrated vertically, this is because Time Warner  is a successful enough production company to be able to pay for all the aspects of producing and distributing our film where as an independent film studio would use horizontal integration.

In conclusion Warner Brothers is the perfect option for us because it is completely compatible with our cast, it has previously produced similar films to ours and I also want to make as much commercial success as possible which is the same goal as Warner Brothers'.

What I would change

What I would Change

If given a second chance to recreate my title sequence there a few aspects that I would like to change, although I am pleased with the final outcome i still believe there is room for improvement.
The first thing I would change would be both characters outfits, this is because I think if George was wearing a shirt and tie along with his blazer the audience would be able to understand his role bit more. The same with Harry, if he wore perhaps a big jacket with rips in it rather than a flannel shirt he may appear more threatening.
Another thing i would change would be the soundtrack simply because it was too much of a hassle to sort out and i think a professional sound track could have fitted better within our title sequence.
As cinematographer i wish i got more canted angle shots in the killer scenes to distort the audience and make them feel uncomfortable and I also wish I filmed more shots using the strobe lighting as it came out really well.

Within the following pictures you can see my group beginning to set up the scene we was about to shoot. It was ket to have good miss en scene in the investigation scene otherwise the audience would have been lost and wondering who this character is and his role within the film. As cinematographer I had to set up the camera in positions where I could establish the set as the first shots, this can be seen within the pictures below as well.

Change In Narrative

Change In Narrative

During the process of making our title sequence we realised that we would need to change our narrative bit because originally we wanted the protagonist to be a father who would be filmed in his home solving the crime however due to us not have time to go and film in someones house we decided that we would just have a detective working in his office. We still-think that it could work having him be the father of the child that has been kid napped however in our new narrative he is already a detective.

Editing Our Title Sequence

Editing Our Title Sequence

Max is our groups editor therefore the following is all the work he did on the title sequence, As an already experienced editor it made sense for him to take this role which he did very well. He also came to me asking for my opinion and if I had any ideas.

The editing software we used was Final Cut Pro because that was the only editing software available on the Macs at school. It didn't take max long to figure out how to use it or lean the specs that we would need to use like the transformation tools including scale, rotation, and anchor point. Final cur has plenty of filters to choose from which comes in handy in case we want a scene to look darker or lighter. The filters can also change the levels of intensity. Max said using Final Cut Pro wasn't easy for him because he is used to working with other software.

We filmed new footage which meant there was more editing for max to do, we realised some shots could be used as transitions from the investigation scene to the killer scene. For example a high angle shot I filmed looking down at his book looks similar to the birds eye view shot of the detective looking down at his work, this meant max could fade the shots so they work together and the title sequence is able to progress.

Typograpghy for our title sequence

Typography for our title sequence

The final font we have decided on is "Mistral".

Mise En Scene - Killer

Mise En Scene - Killer

For the killer played by JK Simmons (Harry) we wanted a very rough look, the outfit we chose was black ripped trousers, big black boots and a bloody flannel shirt.
We also added make up to him to make his hands look like they have been working. We rubbed charcoal all over his hands which made them look very dirty (making sure to get it under his finger nails) and we also added fake blood to his costume and make up. Overall this effect worked really well and his role is clearly established within the title sequence.
As Cinematographer I made sure to get extreme close ups of significant parts of his costume like his boots and hands.

Mise En Scene - Detective

Mise En Scene - Detective

The detectives costume is a suit, we also combed over Georges hair to give him a clean cut haircut and make him look smart. His suit represents power and authority however we didn't add any make up like we did with harry the killer.
The setting for the investigation scenes are in high key lighting to show the binary oppositions of good vs evil and day vs night, the set itself is a conference in our school because it has a computer and a pin board. We needed both these things in order to persuade the audience that the set is actually the detectives office.
I made sure to get to extreme close ups of things like binders, coffee mugs and the investigation board itself as well as a wide shot to establish the set.

Making of the Sound Track

Sound Track

The sound track we used in our title sequence is very original because harry and George created it themselves using logic pro, this was because we wanted a unique piece of music that would fit perfectly with our footage, I would not recommend other students to do this because it requires a lot more added work however we are all Music Tech students so it was fairly easy to make criticise and perfect.

This is the soundtrack - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WKidd5HKFOk

Ideal Release Date

Ideal Release Date

Ideal dates to release our film would be during Easter holidays because that's when teenagers are of school therefore they have a better chance to go and watch it which ensures more commercial success.
An alternative date would be in October as this is a very violent and gory thriller which fits well with the theme of Halloween.
Max also had an idea to show it at a film festival because we may be awarded and will get recognition.

Filming the Investigation scene

Re-shoot of the investigation scene

After getting feedback from our second screening a re-shoot of the investigation scene was due. Many of the same angles were used again but they had to be re-shot because we changed the conference room due to bad lighting.

I used a wide shot to establish the setting and the protagonist, this is so the audience begin to get an understanding of his role within the film. Once George was in the conference room I used high angle shots and Ariel shots to show what he was looking at and the work he was doing.

Harry and max set out the investigation board again which i got close ups of and extreme close ups, I also instructed george to write on certain pictures and link certain photos to others, this was because I needed to capture him gathering evidence and trying to hunt down the killer to create tension.

audience profile

Audience Profile-

Target Age: 15-25
Target Gender: Male
Occupation: Young adults in part time jobs or students with an interest in thriller psycho killer movies with a crime style to them.
Education: Any
Personality/ Interests: An interest in thriller movies with a bit of gore in and murder cases. People who enjoy the thrill of a movie and are looking for surprises. Males tend to watch these kinds of movies more often then women as most enjoy watching violent kinds of movies and dont mind a bit of gore here and there.

Students who may attend colleges only have to attend a few days of the week meaning they have more spare time to go to the cinema and view the film. Young adults would have finished their education and looking for jobs so during this perios of time they are free alot of the time giving them the option of going to the cinema more often.

Our secondary audience would have to be Adults (roughly 30+). Even though i say secondary i still believe they could be classed as the primary because majority of people do enjoy watching crime films so i wouldn't expect people 30+ to not watch this film.

Experimenting with Motion

Experimenting with Motion -

As max is the editor I myself didn't really get to experiment with Motion however I did sit along side max while he did so and gave him certain ideas to try out.
Motion is a new programme recently added to the schools servers that was advised by my teacher to try out incase we wanted to use it to create our titles in our sequence. Max was experimenting in class and he explained how it was similar to Cinema 4D because it has a similar layout and it works the same way as motion. We also decided to play around with our title by making it look creepy to match our genre because we wanted to know if that could be a possible option to use in our final cut. In the end we decided not use to use the motion titles and use the basic 2D titles from after effects.

Feedback

Feed back from 2nd Screening

After we screened our film for second time our peers filled in feedback sheets again giving us constructive criticism on how to improve our title sequence. Many points addressed myself and the editor max talked over and agreed with, as cinematographer I needed to think of new camera angles that will add significance to the title sequence, i have already began to plan out new ideas of which will be included in our next shooting.

Getting feedback from my peers and teachers has really helped me in a sense of getting more orignal shots to improve the title sequence.

An important issue that came up was when the killer was tapping the table because it was too fast, to over come this problem we are either going to re shoot it or max is going to slow it down through editing.

Film Casting -

Title Sequence - Similar Films

Title Sequence - Similar Films

Similar films to ours would be - Shutter Island, Seven, The Departed and The bone collector (1999).

The Bone Collector (1999) - Directed by Phillip Noyce
This film is similar to ours because the protagonist is put under a lot of pressure and tension is built as the protagonist is trying to save someone's life from the killer without much time to do so. The film uses the ticking clock technique to build suspense which is key to any thriller.

Title Sequence - Budget

Title Sequence - Budget

The budget of this film is expected to sit around $85,000,000. This is because many similar films to ours range from $30,000,000 to $90,000,000, we have this high budget because we have high paid a list stars within our film, an example would be the protagonist Leonardo DiCaprio. This high budget will pay the cast and crew plus all the set and special effects costs.

Anamatic

The following is an anamatic of our story boards.

Production log 3

Production Log 3

We are planning to film in the conference room that we booked out, this scene will be a re-shoot in a new location of the investigation scene that we previously filmed for our first screening. It was best to re film this because not only did the first shooting look unprofessional but it also was only 10 seconds long which is no where near enough in contrast with the killer scene.
To re-shoot we needed a camera which I as cinematographer will operate and a tripod to make sure all of the shots are very steady.
We will use props to create a more office like atmosphere; These props are
Binders and folders,
mugs,
name tag,
calculator,
images of a crime scene,
a computer,
a kettle,
a coffee maker,
and a briefcase.
We need to shoot George walking into the conference room, working at a desk, looking at the investigation board, working at a computer and finally a burst of anger where he is frustrated.

Planning Our Next Shoot

Planning Our Next Shoot

Today I took it upon myself to email Mr Jon Taylor, I did this because I wanted to book out a conference room which will be used for reshooting our investigation board scene. After getting feedback from our peers and watching the footage max recorded in his bedroom I decided that we really need to reshoot that particular scene as it looks unprofessional and it doesn't credit us.

This is the convocation i had with Mr. Taylor.

Questionnaire of what should be added

Questionnaire of what I need to add to my title sequence

I will ask my peers and teachers to fill out a questionnaire that asks them Crime/Thriller related questions. The questions will help myself decide what we need to add and after showing my group the results I will be able to take in their input of what we should add in order to make the genre clearer.

The results -
From these results I know that music should be a mixture of Intense and Eerie, there should be Quite a lot of blood, we should take ideas from seven, and it should have an element of horror within it.

There was one more result paper however it never got given back to me.

How to Improve

How to improve

After going through the feedback sheets and listening to my peers opinions and their constructive critism I have started to think about different ways we can improve our title sequence. To improve our title sequence I think we need to use our time efficiently, more use of the strobe lighting because we got good feedback from the panning shots I used while using strobe lighting. I think I will also take some canted angle shots as that gives a more uncomfortable feeling for the audience and possibly use some hand held footage as its farm more jittery and real.

Cinematography -
Canted angle shot
Low angle shot to show the killer as a more powerful being
Hand Held Footage

Sound -
Add foley sound like scratching or footsteps for example

Editing -
No gaps
Credits
Correct font
Clear narrative structure

Mise en Scene -
Possibly add a new location
More props
investigation scene needs work e.g. wrong setting.
new character

First Screening

First Screening

Feedback of First screening

Today we presented to the class our first screening which unfortunately didn't go as well as we wanted it to simply because Max didn't have the footage we recored until today. From the footage of the first shoot he was able to put together a first screening however it didn't credit the group as well as we hoped. From what we have edited so far the entire class saw the potential of the title sequence because what we had was good and Max's editing was really good. The class thought our cinematography was good and the soundtrack Max added suited the footage well. The things the class thought we need to develop are the investigation scene, clearer narrative and the length of what we presented which i agree with. Out of the class ours had the second longest length however it was still just 40 seconds which isn't good enough.

Production log 2

Production Log - 2

Today we filmed for our second shoot, this consisted of re shooting certain shots that we thought were too grainy or shaky, shooting new shots experimenting with strobe lighting and finally filming new close ups. I filmed any significant part of the rise en scene in an extreme close up because it focuses on that specific object. Some things will not be apart of the final piece because when editing some shots are much more engaging compared to others therefore we only want to use our very best shots. I also had an idea of writing on taking paper and filming that backwards which could act as an over lay through editing. This prop was mainly just to distort the audience and it turned out to look really cool.

Setting up the scene took much monger than expected because there was small light interferences overtime i wanted to use a new shot. To over come this problem we covered any light interference and resulted to using our phone torches which gave us the same eery low key lighting. This made the entire footage flow very well.

Title Sequence Narrative

Narrative
We have come up with a narrative for our title sequences film, using todorovs narrative structure.
this is our narrative:

Equilibrium:New family move into new house. (father/ex cop and two sons/one young one late teens)
they notice that their are no kids on the street.

Disruption:children been going missing since the neighbour has lived there, only this streets children go missing
family don't believe it carry on packing
few days later one night youngest son wakes to the sound of pebbles being thrown at his window he goes to check and finds a figure of a very tall man over the road just staring at him, as a car goes by the man disappeared. weird things keep happening to the boy: he wakes up in the morning to find things have moved around in his room to finding his window wide open and footprints around his room. This becomes more serious with each happening.

Disequilibrium:the father is told about the children being murdered in depth. (only evidence are polaroid's of the dead children with them scribbled out).
fathers youngest son goes missing from his room one night. only thing left behind is a picture of both sons but the eldest eyes are scribbled out. the father believes his son has been taken by whatever has killed the other children, the father goes to the police station to look through evidence this shows him that all the murders happened exactly four days after they went missing, on the fourth day using the evidence he finds out where his son is rapidly heads there in hope of finding him alive.

Attempt to repair:father finds the place races in to find his son bound and gaged but alive, goes to leave until the killer terns up. father fights the killer he thinks he's dead. they leave to go home.

New equilibrium:they get home to find the front door wide open. they walk inside wearily and in the hallway they find the same polaroid that was on his young sons bed but with the eldest son scribbled out. the father sees the back door open and finds that his eldest son is dead in a tree in the back garden.

Filming our First Shoot

First Shoot

Today myself harry George and max filmed our first shoot in the drama room, we used our prop book that harry made, fake blood, a strobe light, netted yarn, fake knives and the filming equipment. I as the cinematogropher recorded all of the shots and said what shots we will use to create as much tension as possible however everyone contributed their ideas and we all decided what was best in order to engage the audience. We needed low key lighting so we suggested to use our phone cameras which turned out to work very well.

These are photographs of our prop book -

David Fincher - Inspiration

David Fincher - Inspiration

David Fincher was a huge inspiration when coming up with ideas or shots I could film when making  our title sequence. Analysing Finchers work especially in "Seven"enabled us to start planning a narrative and possible sets.

Fincher tends to use Low-key lighting a lot which would be suitable for us because we are trying to make an eerie thriller movie.

Fincher also gave me inspiration to what camera angles to use, for example I'm going to try to get as many Extreme close ups and Medium close ups as possible because they will not only add emphasis but they can also act as an overlay shot when it comes to transitions in editing.

Genre Research

Genre Research - The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo

The title sequence is very unconventional because it doesn't establish any characters or the films genre, the audience are instead left with clues to what themes/possible narratives are to come. For this reason a puzzle has been created which is a brilliant technique to engage the audience. The title sequence begins with extreme close ups of images that can't be identified, only the texture of these objects can be focused on by the audience. These close ups increase the mystery behind the title sequence and add tension. The visuals interacts with the baseline in the soundtrack at the beginning ; the audience are only able to see the visuals when the music is playing which shows their is a relationship with everything thats going on within the title sequence. This however stops until the beat picks up because by then the audience is already engaged. The entire title sequence involves low key lighting, the main colour is black and the use of shading/ highlighting enables the title sequence to come together because the audience can begin to see what the images are revealing.

The use of black ink is very graphic in the sequence, it forms new images which help progress the sequence. The "ink" is used as a symbol to represent the films title because ink is required to make a tattoo. This is not the first time the title has been interweaved within the title sequence itself, a close up of what appears to be dragon scales appears in the beginning of the title sequence. Also in this image we can see how the ink covers the typography.

The content is very distressing because it makes the audience feel uncomfortable due to the unnatural body movements of the characters. We begin to get an understanding of possible narratives and themes because things like fire and ink pouring out of the character's eyes and mouth. The fire could represent the " dragon " because we associate dragons to breathe fire. The title sequence gives the audience the impression that a love interest will come up within the film because of the two characters intimately pulling each other tight together.

After the motionless body is drowning we see wings sprout from another characters body, the wings soon form into an entire dragons body and although we only see it for a split second, the dragon is still present within the title sequence. The title sequence end with a character screaming in time with the music ending, this tells the audience the film is about to begin.

Analysis of Saul Bass's title sequences

Analysis of Saul Bass's title sequences

Saul Bass is a title sequence designer who is very unique with his style of editing. In his work he doesn't tend to use live clips of people moving, instead he creates animation sequences where he animates random shapes or actions and in corporates those with the text to create his title sequences. In some of his work he uses still images and just moves them across the screen and adding in credits. Sometimes the still images can reference or establish scenes or narrative in the film. For example in the title sequence ''Around the world in 80 days'' the audience is shown cartoon images of different places around the world to establish that the film is going to be about traveling the world.

This is a screenshot from the title sequence for around the world in 80 days. Here we can see a man who is likely Asian as he has his hair tied up in a bun and has a paper umbrella. This shows that at some point in the film there will be a scene in Asia. Due to his appearance the audience instantly begins to relate him with stereotypes however Bass's work is known for animating characters within the film and begin to establish their values and opinions. There are other stereotypes within the title sequence, one would be a character (pocket watch) in a top hat drinking tea, this figure would be considered to be British as it expresses British values. In this sequence we see a butterfly flying through to all the different scenes (possibly countries). The butterfly could represent the characters in the film traveling around the world. This is the first symbol that represents the theme of travel, as the title sequence progresses the audience can see other forms of travel. An example of these would be the boat and train. All forms of representations within the theme of travel move forward, this suggests the story is progressing and the journey is being discovered. This also ensures the audience that travel is apart of the narrative.

The butterfly leads the story as it transitions across screen, unraveling the new shots. The butterfly also enables the audience to begin to get an understanding of the characters within the film, it is very conventional for a title sequence to establish themes and characters within the film and Saul Bass manages to do this in an abstract unique which manages to engage the audience right from the start. It is because of this he is one of the most successful title sequence designers and very well known in the film industry, his iconic work never fails to amaze its audience.

Analysis of Title Sequence - Se7en

Analysis of Title Sequence - Se7en

In lesson we began to discuss the codes and conventions of Kyle Coopers title sequence to 'Se7en'.
This is a link to the title sequence via Youtube - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-k2gsEI34CE.

The title sequence begins with a dark image of crooked broken hands, this image alone resembles most of the title sequence because the hands represent how the title sequence will disorientate the audience. The directors name is very visible, this allows finches work to be recognised and establishes the opening credits are going to roll. The entire title sequence is very eery and its in a low-key lighting which creates atmosphere which establishes the genre. This makes the title sequence conventional because its already set the genre. The soundtrack in this title sequence is very creepy and spooks its audience, there is a lot of white noise and scratching of metals which is a method used to disorientate the audience, it also establishes the genre.

The most recognised actors within the film have an entire blacked out shot with just their name on it in the opening credits, this is star power and ensures the audience the film has very good potential. The characters names and all opening credits for that matter are in a very unique font. The typology really makes the title sequence, this is because its handwritten yet it seems very sinister due to the scratchiness of it. A link can me made between the opening credits and the scratch book the killer is writing in through out the title sequence because they are in the same creepy handwriting.

As the title sequence progresses the audience are introduced to a character within the film. This character is first seen cutting of his fingerprints with a razor, as the title sequence progress the audience is aware that this character is very dark and could possibly be the antagonist. Possible narratives can be assumed as the title sequence reveals the usual things the "antagonist " is doing.

The antagonist is constantly cutting up polaroid pictures and old film which suggests to the audience he has traditional beliefs and doesn't appreciate technology or science. After watching the film we understand he has religious beliefs which is his motive for murdering people however they are not traditional christian values, they are instead evil and twisted. The theme of religion is first introduced in the title sequence when the killer is cutting the word "God" from a newspaper.
